Winning Technology – Bridging the Gap between Able and Disabled Athletes

Yorkshire, UK (PRWEB UK) 14 May 2012

In terms of results, South African Oscar Pistorius ran the mens 100 metres in Beijing (2008) in 11.17 secs, compared to Portugals Jose Reinaldo Pieira who competed in 1984, held in Los Angeles and New York, and ran the 100 metres in 12.94 secs.

By comparison, the results of able bodied athletes have only improved their times marginally, as Carl Lewis achieved a time of 9.99 secs in 1984 for the mens 100 metres, whilst Usian Bolt ran the same race in Beijing in 9.69 secs.

One of the factors which has resulted in these improvements is the development in prosthetics. Ebuyer worked with Salford University to conduct the research, which is one of only two Universities in the UK to offer a course in prosthetics.

Anne Wafula Strike, International Athlete and Author said: Technology is brilliant for most athletes in developed countries. It helps them to improve performance and compete on an almost even footing. However, what concerns me is that there are athletes in low income countries – how do they compete on an even stage? I am looking forward to seeing athletes of all abilities competing against each other on a world stage and raising the profile of disability sports.

Dave Wood from Ebuyer said: There have been exciting technological progressions in recent years, we can see a steady improvement in the times that are being achieved as a result of these new innovative advancements. Looking at the results we can see the gap between disability sports closing, and hopefully, in the future, disappearing.

"the Lord is near to the broken hearted and saved those who are crushed in spirit"

[Texture:Tony Immoos"]

UPDATES: I’m going to be on Flickr that much guys because my camera might be broken. I will updates you guys later.

A couple years ago, I was in the most difficult state in my life. I was broken and I felt like I was a failure. How can anyone love a person like me? I’m useless! I remember lying at the beach feeling down while I was looking at the clouds. I was so negative about my own life that I never even bothered about how really God see’s me. I don’t remember what happened that day but I remember looking up and saw a heart shape cloud.

It was a beautiful moment for me.

I just want you guys to know that you’re not alone with your journey. Sometimes you may feel like no one really loves you but your wrong. You just need to open your eyes and listen to the person who really cares about you. A lot time’s people are so blind that they focus more on the person they want to receive love from. I realized sometimes that the one who you love less will love you more.

You may experience something different from me. I was never really into religion until my friend invited me to a bible study. I hope you guys encounter love in a different way like I do. =)

God bless everyone

Alzheimer’s Foundation of America to Hold National Memory Screening Day During National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 30, 2009

As research continues to mount about the effectiveness of memory screenings and the benefits of early detection of memory problems, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will hold its 7th annual National Memory Screening Day on November 17.

The event coincides with National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, observed during November.

More than 2,000 sites across the country will offer free, confidential memory screenings and educational materials about memory concerns, successful aging and local resources. The face-to-face screening, conducted by a qualified healthcare professional, takes about five minutes to administer and consists of a series of questions and/or tasks. Sites include doctor’s offices, senior centers and assisted living facilities, as well as 1,030 Kmart Pharmacy locations nationwide as part of the chain’s GoldK Day.

To locate a screening site, visit http://www.nationalmemoryscreening.org or call 866-AFA-8484.

AFA believes memory screenings are appropriate for individuals concerned about memory loss or experiencing warning signs of dementia; whose family and friends have noticed changes in them; who believe they are at risk due to a family history of Alzheimer’s disease or a related illness; or who want to see how their memory is now and for future comparisons.

“We must break through the enormous stigma and denial about memory problems that still exist today,” said Eric J. Hall, AFA’s president and chief executive officer. “It’s a message that the nation as a whole and aging baby boomers especially need to heed.”

Actor Hector Elizondo, whose mother had Alzheimer’s disease and who is serving as AFA’s honorary celebrity chairman, is also urging Americans to get screened.

“If you have memory concerns, burying your head in the sand doesn’t help you or your family,” Elizondo said. “Screenings are a great starting point to find out what what’s really going on and can lead to the care you might need–and the support your family might need.”

During National Memory Screening Day, screeners emphasize that the test results do not represent a diagnosis and encourage individuals with below-normal scores as well as those who still have concerns to pursue a full medical exam.

Some memory problems can be readily treated, such as those caused by vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems. Other member problems might result from causes that are not currently reversible, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease include forgetting people’s names and events, asking repetitive questions, loss of verbal or written skills, and confusion over daily routines.

More than 20 professional and trade groups have signed on as supporters of National Memory Screening Day this year, including the American Academy of Neurology, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of State Units on Aging and the National Council on Aging.

In a report entitled “Memory Matters” released last December, AFA noted that current research supports screening as a “safe, cost-efficient intervention that can reassure the healthy individual, promote successful aging and, when indicated, direct individuals to appropriate clinical resources.”

Sponsors of the 2009 event are Forest Pharmaceuticals, as presenting sponsor; Novartis, silver sponsor; Eisai Inc., Pfizer Inc and Accera, remembrance sponsors; Elan Wyeth, empowerment sponsor; and CogniFit, community sites sponsor.

It is estimated that as many as 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, which causes loss of memory and other intellectual functions. With age the greatest known risk factor, the incidence of the disease doubles every five years between 65 and 95.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is a national nonprofit organization headquartered in New York and made up of more than 1,200 member organizations nationwide that provide hands-on programs to meet the educational, emotional, practical and social needs of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related illnesses, and their families. AFA’s services include a toll-free hot line, counseling, educational materials, a free caregiver magazine and professional training. Background

Ginkgo Biloba comes from the Ginkgo tree. The Ginko tree is one of the oldest living tree species and has been on our planet for approximately 200 million years. The Ginkgo tree can live up to a 1,000 years and typically grows to a height of 120 feet. It has short branches with fan-shaped leaves and produces fruit that have a strong odor and are not edible.

The Chinese have used Ginkgo for thousands of years for treatment of asthma and lung congestion. They also used Ginko to increase sexual energy, regulate blood flow and promote general longevity of life. Ginkgo Biloba was first introduced to Europe in the 1700′s, and is now used widely all over the world. Ginkgo Biloba has been heavily researched by the scientific community and is one of the top selling herbs in the United States.

More than 40 components of the Ginkgo tree have been identified and studied. Two of the components, flavonoids and terpenoids, are believed to be beneficial in promoting health. Flavonoids are plant-based antioxidants that prevent damage to cells from chemicals called free radicals. Laboratory studies have shown that flavonoids protect the nerves, heart muscle, blood vessels, and retina from damage. Terpenoids improve blood flow by dilating blood vessels and reducing the stickiness of platelets (blood components that aid in clotting) in the blood stream.

Although not definitive, there is promising evidence favoring the use of Ginkgo for memory enhancement in healthy subjects, altitude (mountain) sickness, symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and reduction of chemotherapy-induced end-organ vascular damage.

Benefits of Ginko Biloba

1. Ginko is well recognized for its positive effect on brain functioning, enhancing memory, mental alertness and reducing mental fatigue.

2. Ginko increases blood flow to the brain. This increases the oxygen levels in the brain, which results in better concentration and improvement in memory.

3. Ginkgo leaves contain compounds that thin blood and help to improve muscle tone in the walls of blood vessels. This results in increased blood flow to the brain and throughout the body’s network of blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the organs.

4. Benefits of enhanced circulation in the brain include improved short and long term memory, increased reaction time and improved mental clarity.

5. Ginkgo Biloba beneficial effects on the circulatory system also helps in the treatment of eye and ear disorders.

6. Increases efficiency of metabolism, regulates neurotransmitters and boosts oxygen levels in the brain.

7. May help control the transformation of cholesterol to plaque associated with the hardening of arteries and can relax constricted blood vessels.

8. Has been shown to be a supportive herb for treating infertility in males or impotence.

9. Helps prevent damage to your organs from free radicals and also blocks the platelet activating factor which causes some skin disorders such as psoriasis.

Although Chinese herbal medicine has used both the Ginkgo leaf and seed for thousands of years, modern research has focused on the standardized Ginko Biloba extract, which is prepared from the dried green leaves and used to make tablets, capsules and teas. This standardized extract is highly concentrated and seems to be more effective for health purposes and treating health problems.

Ginko has not been reported to cause any severe side effects in the body except for a minor sympton of internal bleeding when Ginko Biloba is combined with blood thinners such as aspirin or Coumadin. Some people who have consumed the Ginko leaf have suffered from symtoms such as headache, nausea and intestinal complaints. Ginko has also been shown to affect the level of insulin and blood sugar level in the body. People who are taking medications should consult their doctor before taking Ginko.

Nancy has a passion for reaching these people, and travels at least three times a year to places like Kenya and Ethiopia. Not so long ago, she delivered aid to the Luo and Borana tribes. We traveled solely to deliver humanitarian aid to prisoners in two Bangkok prisons, and to tribal refugees along the Burmese border.
